Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy, Commissioner & Special Officer, GHMC said that around 7000 and above Municipal Corporations, Municipalities are in the Country and the main and major issue is about Solid Waste Management. A delegation of 51 IAS Officers from 18 other States have visited today GHMC as a part of study tour with regard to various civic related issues and developmental activities of the GHMC.
The Commissioner & S.O while interacting with the visiting delegates and explained the details through power point presentation with regard to Revenue collections, Solid Waste Management and various other civic issues and further stated that almost all the Municipalities in the Country have to provide basic civic needs like drinking water, drainage, solid waste management will be costing around Rs. 32 lakhs for every Corporation as per the survey, he added.
The State Governments of various states in the country cannot allot more funds to the municipalities and it is the foremost duty of the corporations / municipalities to fetch up their own revenue through revenue collections like property tax etc., to provide basic civic needs to the citizens of the city.
The Municipal Corporations are taking up recycling of water treatment with which only 20% of the water can be utilized for parks, social forest works. The GHMC is trying to segregate the construction materials waste and debris duly installing a C&D plant for the above said works. This type of C&D plant is only in New Delhi.
Sri Ratan Lahoti, Senior IAS Officer from Rajasthan State, Team leader of the visiting delegates has praised the efforts being made by the GHMC with regard to solid waste management and other innovative schemes taken up by the GHMC and other municipalities in the country have to follow this type of activities in various Corporations, Municipalities, he suggested.
