PRESS NOTE ON AMEENPUR LAKE HYDERABAD

PRESS NOTE ON AMEENPUR LAKE SYSTEM

The Ameenpur Lake system is located in the outskirts of Hyderabad at Ameenpur Village, Patancheru Mandal, Medak District.  The Ameenpur lake is abutting the TSPF Training Academy located in Ameenpur.
The Ameenpur Lake system consists of 13 lakes in Ameenpur.  They are Bandamkommu, Kummari Kunta, Malla Kunta, Gandi Kunta, Pochamma Kunta, Koneru Kunta, Upparaveni Kunta, Shambuni Kunta, Nimba Cheruvu, Ameenpur Pedda Cheruvu, Ameenpur Chinna Cheruvu, Shetti Kunta/Dubba Kunta, Usakabavi and two feeder lakes Makta Meedi Kunta and Makta Kindi Kunta located in Serilingampally Mandal of Ranga Reddy District.

We have conducted three cleanup drives in different spells and got permission from the Collector, Medak and Collector, Ranga Reddy for adoption of these lakes for ecological conservation initiatives in order to preserve them for the future generations.
Volunteers of the Telangana State Special Protection Force were supported by the GHMC, Collector and District Magistrate, Medak, District Police, Medak and the Gram Panchayat, Ameenpur during the cleanup drive.
All the listed water-bodies are man-made and chain linked to each other.  The primary purpose of these water bodies are irrigation and drinking, however other uses include fisheries and washing of clothes.  Due to urbanization there is no Irrigation and water is polluted with domestic sewage making it unfit for drinking.  The Bio-Diversity has also been damaged due to encroachments and exploitation.
Extinction and pollution of water-bodies is resulting in falling of ground water level creating a severe shortage of drinking water apart from damaging the ecosystem.  Rise in temperature and deficient rain-fall are of major concern.
Importance of the Lake:
The Lake is home to many migratory and resident birds.
There is a huge list of Flora and Fauna that is found in and around the lake.
Tremendous Biodiversity is available at Ameenpur Lake with a variety of herbs, shrubs, creepers, medicinal flora, trees, animals, reptiles, birds, insects, microbes etc.
Around 171 species of birds (migratory and residents), 250 plant species (including rare and medicinal), 9 fish species, 26 aquatic beetles, 41 butterfly species, 33 species of invertebrates, 12 amphibian species, 33 reptiles species, 9 species of wild animals and millet diversity is available in the area.
Bird Watchers Paradise:
The Ameenpur Lake and the surrounding small lakes has a great potential to be converted to a heritage Bio-Diversity Park with rich avi-fauna that it offers, which could be used to spread awareness among citizens and also help preserve the lake and its surroundings for the future generations.

The Ameenpur lakes are among the few water bodies left in the State of Telangana and it is known as Birding Paradise of Telangana where more than 171 species of both resident and migrants like Desert Wheatear, Greater Flamingos, White Wagtail, Yellow Wagtail, Small Pratincole, Oriental Pratincole, River Tern, Eurasian Spoonbill, Bronze Winged Jacana, Pheasant Tailed Jacana, Indian Eagle Owl, Spotted Owl, Common Hawk Cuckoo, Shikra, Brahminy Kite, Black Kite, Black Winged Stilt, Greater Cormorant, Little Cormorant, Ruddy Shelduck, Common Coot, Northern Pintail, Mallad, Common Kingfisher, White Throated Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, Red Munia, Indian Silverbill, Scaly Breasted Munia, Indian Robin, Common Kestrel, Pied Bushchat, Zitting Cisticola, Raptors, Common Hoopoe, Cattle Egret, Little Egret and Intermediate Egret etc., frequent the lake which has wide variety of fishes, amphibians and reptiles such as Checkered Keelbacks, Russell Viper some species of fishes and snakes in the water sheet and the trees and shrubs in its environs spread over 100 acres.  Apart from birds, there are around 8 species of snakes that include Cobras and the Rat Snake. The bio-diversity of the lake also includes a wide variety of insects, butterflies and other reptiles such as Oriental Garden Lizard, Rock Agama, Fan-Throated Lizard etc., and flora that include a few herbal species to name a few.  Most of the nesting sites for the birds and reptiles are found at TS SPF Training Academy.

Apart from the avi-fauna, the lake is surrounded by wonderful rock formations, and, there are also reports of three caves in a granite rock cropping on the shores of the lake.  Unlike sandstone and limestone caves, these caves do not have any stalagmites and stalactites but are dark and cool even during summer.

Based on a drastic reduction in the avi-fauna in the lake, a thorough analysis revealed that are about 25 activities that are detrimental to the very existence of this lake and its biodiversity.  These activities are posing a threat not only to the lake, but to the entire biodiversity abutting the lake and to the upcoming Training Academy of the TSSPF.
Emergence of factories, housing colonies, unlawful constructions and other encroachments, including mines, in the lake conservancy zone has posed environmental threats to the area around the lake. “There are several issues like the unauthorized occupation of the lake bed where lay outs have sprung up, the flow of domestic wastage and industrial effluents besides the killing of birds as game or for exotic meat of which there is evidence in the lake environs that have to be addressed.

The Telangana State Biodiversity Board is taking all necessary steps for declaring it as a Biological Heritage Site.

Harish Rao in the Telangana Secretariat on 25-08-2015 and the Principal Secretaries, Municipal Administration & Urban Development and Irrigation, Commissioner, GHMC & HMDA, Officials of Irrigation Department were present and discussed ways and means to develop and maintain the ecosystem in and around the lake area to preserve it for the future generations.
