Women Wearing Leggings are 'Crossing All Limits': Tamil Magazine Kumudam Lands in Trouble
CHENNAI: A cover story in a Tamil bi-weekly on the
women’s wear, leggings, allegedly portraying those who
sport it in a bad light, has kicked off a storm, more so in the
virtual world, with many charging that the article
amounted to moral policing.
There is even an online petition, asking the magazine to
apologise for the article.
The latest issue of popular Tamil periodical Magazine
Reporter ran the story on women wearing leggings,
terming it ‘crossing the limits’ of acceptable dress code. It
was accompanied by several photographs of women on the
road and riding pillion, all cropped suggestively to further
drive in the message that leggings were provocative. Soon
after the weekly hit the news stands, a controversy erupted
over the moralistic tone of the article, with scores especially
the youth — but not restricted to women alone — coming
out with scathing criticisms. The article was variously
described as misogynistic and regressive, and the magazine was asked to apologise for running it.
DMK member Kanimozhi came out with a statement
alleging that to be “moral policing masquerading as
journalism. It is a classic case of objectification of women.”
The activistic site Change.org has a petition addressed to
the management of the periodical that has already received
nearly 2,500 petitions within just a few hours.
