Hundreds register for Jeevandan
Over 100 people seeking liver transplant have registered themselves on the government website of Jeevandan, after the Telangana government sanctioned Rs 11 lakh per transplant when it was successfully carried out in Osmania General Hospital and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.
The waiting list earlier was of 250 patients. After the government scheme was announced, more and more patients are coming forward to take advantage. Dr Swarna Latha, Jeevandan co-ordinator, explained, “Most of the recipients can fill the forms online and are aware of their day-to-day priority status.”
The next step for Jeevandan is to set up a Heart Transplant Center in Gandhi Hospital. In the last three months, three hearts were transported to Chennai. Dr Latha explained, “There were no takers in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and hence we had to ask other southern states if they had a listed recipient.”
Jeevandan, an organ donation scheme of the government, has been named as having one of the best websites in the top 12 category in the country by the Union Government.
With the website being clear and transparent, all the registered hospitals in the both the states can access the data of donors as well as recipients. Similarly, good co-ordination has been done with states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka to ensure that all the harvested organs are used properly.
