Patels' stir for OBC quota: Latest developments

AHMEDABAD: A day after violence erupted in Gujarat during stir for quota by Patel community, curfew has been clamped in many parts of the state
Here are the latest developments:

1. A statewide shutdown is being observed in Gujarat on Wednesday. Patel Anamat Andolan Samiti has given the bandh call.

2. Curfew was imposed in nine police stations limits of Ahmedabad in the wee hours on Wednesday at around 2:00am. The areas include Ramol, Nikol, Bapunagar, Ghatlodia, Odhav, Naroda, Narayanpura, Krishnanagar and Vadaj, police officials said. More than 50 incidents of violence were reported from Ahmedabad city where buses, police posts and private vehicles were set on fire while police personnel were also attacked at some places.

3. The violence also spread to other parts of the state like Mehsana, Rajkot and Surat. Similar incidents were also reported from remote areas of Saurashtra region.

4. As per tentative counts, more than 100 buses have been damaged in different cities, while several private cars and motorcycles were set on fire in different parts of the state.

5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for peace in Gujarat, saying violence does not benefit anybody. Earlier, Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel has also issued an appeal to people to maintain peace. ​Union home minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel and assured her of full central help to tackle the situation.


6. About 5,000 personnel of Rapid Action Force, CRPF and BSF have been rushed to Gujarat to assist the local administration in maintaining law and order, especially in all curfew-bound areas.


7. Internet services have been suspended in some parts of Gujarat to stop rumour-mongering.

8. Schools and colleges are closed for the day.

9. Rijiju smells 'rat' behind Patels' agitation in Gujarat. He added that some people are instigating the people of the state to disturb law and order. "May be some people are instigating from behind, to disturb the law and order situation in the state, they should not do like this, it is very important to keep the atmosphere calm," Rijiju said.

10. The total number of death has increased to six including three in Ahmedabad, two in Palanpur and one in Mehsana.
