Maoists Allegedly Kidnap 3 TDP Members in AP; Police Suspect Resistance to Bauxite Mining

Three TDP leaders held captive by Naxals in Andhra Pradesh

VISHAKAPATNAM: Three Telugu Desam Party workers have allegedly been kidnapped by Maoists in Gudem Kothaveedhi mandal in the Agency area of the district.

They are: TDP Gudem Kothaveedhi mandal president V Balayya, party district executive committee member Mukkili Mahesh and local janmabhoomi committee member M Balayya.
The Maoists reportedly asked them to assemble at Kothaguda in Gudem Kothaveedhi mandal yesterday evening and when they did, the ultras approached them at about 7 p.m. and took them into the deep jungles for talking to them.  According to police, the tribals in Kothaguda who saw the Maoists take the three TDP functionaries into the jungle, informed the police.
The police said that the Maoists have not yet put out any demands so far but it is suspected that they took the three TDP leaders captive protesting the government move to open agency area for bauxite mining.
In fact, they have been campaigning in the agency area that a bandh would be in force from October 7 to 13 opposing bauxite mining.
