UP 'beef' lynching:
DADRI: The lynching of Mohammed Ikhlaq in Bisada village on Monday night has sent shockwaves across the country. Even as the UP state government has assured a swift and complete investigation, politicians across party lines have been making a beeline to meet the victim's family.
Here are 10 latest developments:
All India Itthadul Majlis-e-Itthadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi visited Ikhlaq's family members on Friday (October 2) and assured them of his full support. He took the opportunity to harshly criticize UP's ruling Samajwadi Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. "The killing was not an accident but was pre-planned," he said. "SP is getting a forensic test on the meat instead of punishing the accused. Even PM Modi is silent on the matter."
Union minister Mahesh Sharma also visited the family later. He said that PM Modi has been apprised of the situation. "This was not a pre-planned murder. It's an unfortunate accident," he said, about Owaisi's accusation. "This is a blot on our society and no politics should be played around this incident."
Dadri is in a state of fragile peace, for now. UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said on that peace must be maintained at all costs. "Rumours have no substance but can wreak a lot of havoc. We should all remain calm," he said.
Ikhlaq, 58, was reportedly dragged out of his house by a mob on Monday night after rumours that he had consumed beef and also stored it in his house. The lynch mob later clashed with the police and six people were arrested.
UP CM Yadav announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the victim on Wednesday. Large numbers of security personnel have been deployed in Bisada,. "Around 800 armed forces, including a battalion of Provincial Armed Constabulary and police from Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr and Hapur, have been deployed in the village and the areas around it," said Kiran S, the SSP of Gautam Budh Nagar.
A point to note is that there is no mention of beef in the FIR filed. Ten people - six in their late 20s - have been named as the accused from over a 100 unknown assailants.
Police looking into the Dadri lynching said on Thursday that the "trigger" for the incident was an announcement by a local temple that beef was being consumed by the victim's family. A priest and two youths are believed to have "major links" to the case.
Muslims in the village - including the family of Ikhlaq - plan to leave their homes if the current situation worsens.
