271 mandals in Telangana still short of rains
HYDERABAD:
Despite Telangana receiving good rainfall this month, 271 of the 459
mandals in the state continue to face shortfall of rain. The agriculture
and revenue department officials are beginning to get worried as 257
mandals have recorded deficit rainfall so far and 14 other mandals have
registered only scanty rainfall.
The south-west monsoon season
started on June 1, 2015 and will end by this month end. While the normal
rainfall is 629 mm, the state has received 490 mm so far, marking a
-22% deviation than the normal. While June received excess rainfall,
July and August have recorded deficit rainfall. The northern Telangana
districts such as Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal received more rain (742
mm) than the southern part of Telangana (629 mm) till the second week
of September. The officials hope that due to low pressure formed in the
Bay of Bengal, some districts in Northern Telangana may receive some
more rains before the season ends.
So far, according to
officials, the districts of Warangal (34 mandals), Nalgonda (31 mandals)
and Khammam (30 mandals) have received normal rainfall. Of the mandals
that have recorded deficits, 41 mandals across Adilabad, Karimnagar and
Medak districts while 36 mandals in Mahabubnagar and 35 mandals in
Nizamabad have registered less than normal rains.
While excess
rainfall was recorded in 38 mandals, none of the mandals in Adilabad,
Nizamabad and Hyderabad fall into this category despite the districts
experiencing some strong showers in the past couple of weeks. While
deficit and scanty rains have severely affected agriculture, these
conditions are expected to further deplete the ground water levels in
several districts, especially Mahbubnagar, Medak, Ranga Reddy and
Nizamabad.
"The state government will start working on disaster
management plans after first week of October once drought situation is
assessed based on drought manuals and parameters. The panel will take
appropriate measures on drought situation," special commissioner of
Telangana disaster management wing Sada Bhargavi said.
