Rs.1.2 lakh is spent on...............

200 new ‘108’ ambulances to replace existing ones

The State government has identified more than 200 new ambulance vehicles to replace the existing ones under the ‘108’ambulance services, said K. Krishnam Raju, director, GVK EMRI.

He was addressing a press conference here on the occasion of the 108 ambulance services completing 10 years of service. When asked if the ambulance services can become self-sufficient in future, Mr. Raju stated that it might take another two decades for that to happen.

“We have asked some State governments to pay management fee and some have agreed,” he mentioned. About the response time of the vehicles, he said it is 15 minutes in urban areas, 20 minutes in small towns and 30 minutes in rural areas. “That is because there is one ambulance per one lakh people,” said Mr. Raju, and added that in Hyderabad, GVK EMRI operates 16 ambulances. “As of now, about Rs.1.2 lakh is spent on each ambulance per month, which includes maintenance, fuel expenses, training cost and others,” he added. GVK EMRI chairman G.V.K. Reddy, who was also present, said the GVK EMRI services will start operations in Sri Lanka by the end of this year, and the organisation is also looking to expand to other SAARC countries.

Mr. Reddy said the Indian government has donated about Rs.50 crore for the services in Sri Lanka. When asked about the air ambulance service in India, he said that GVK EMRI will only take care of operations, as the equipment will be procured by a third party.
