65-year-old woman falls prey to cyber fraud..
A 65-year-old woman became the latest victim of online matrimonial fraud when a stranger expressed his willingness to marry and duped her of Rs. 65,000.
The woman, a retired government employee, lives alone after the death of her husband a few years ago, while her two children were killed in a road accident.
Two months ago, the woman posted her profile on an online matrimonial site.
A man introduced himself as Charles Brown, a doctor from United Kingdom and contacted the victim.
Both of them chatted over phone and social media for nearly a month, thepolice said.
A few weeks ago, Charles contacted her saying that he was coming to India to discuss about the marriage proposal.
A couple of days ago he called her up and said that he was caught by the customs officials at the Delhi Airport.
“Charles told the woman that he was held for carrying expensive mobile phones. He asked the woman to get him out of the crisis and handed over the phone to a lady who introduced herself as a customs official and told her to pay Rs. 65,000 as customs clearance,” Cyber Crime Inspector, KV M Prasad said.
The ‘customs official’ told her to deposit the money in a bank account which the woman did. But when she called back Charles on his mobile the phone was switched off. Realising that she was cheated the woman approached the Hyderabad CCS police and lodged a complaint with them.
